Frequently asked questions at First Psychology Centre, Glasgow

I am not sure what to expect when I come for an initial session, help!

An initial session gives you the chance to talk to one of our qualified and experienced practitioners to discuss your situation and to agree what might help (if anything). We know it can feel an intimidating and uncomfortable experience and we are really used to putting you at ease in a whole range of ways. Just arrive for your appointment, let us know you are here, and then take a seat in our waiting area until we come to get you. In the session, we will ask you a few questions about your situation and tell you a bit more about how we work and what might be best for you. Clients often tell us they find time flies in the initial session, so don't worry.

I find it difficult to talk about things. Will this be a problem?

It is not uncommon to worry about 'clamming up' in coming to counselling, CBT, psychotherapy or coaching. However, in reality it rarely happens. We know some people feel more comfortable than others in talking about things and are accustomed to working with you to find a way of doing things that feels OK.

What will happen if I am not sure the practitioner I see to start with is the right person for me?

We know that people 'fit' better with some rather than others and sometimes the approach of one person is just not the right one for you. If this is the case, we would be really happy to talk to you about what might work better and who might be able to offer this. During an initial session, your practitioner will discuss this with you, and at that time explore whether someone else might suit better. Alternatively, you can contact our administrative team at any time to discuss the situation and find a way of changing things. It is important to say that we all would rather find what is right for you and welcome any discussion on things if you are not sure the way we work is necessarily what you wish.

Should I do any preparation for my initial session?

There is no need to do any formal preparation for an initial session, although some people find bringing a note of things they want to tell us can be useful.

Is what I say confidential and will anything be put on my medical records?

Everything you tell us in your sessions is confidential and will not be passed on to anyone without your permission, including your GP (except in a few extreme risk situations which we will speak to you about in the initial session). Sometimes it is helpful for us to let your GP know you are working with us and we will talk to you about this if we feel this is the case. However, other than this, all material disclosed is confidential and will not be entered onto your medical records.
