Depression - an introduction
What is depression?
The main features of depression that are used to describe and diagnose it are; low mood, a loss of interest or enjoyment in various activities and low self-esteem, which are present over a prolonged period of time. All of these can make daily living seem like a struggle and you may feel as though you aren't able to cope with things that before you had no trouble dealing with.
It can be hard to tell people you are having trouble coping. This can be particularly true for men, who feel great pressure to live up to masculine stereotypes.
Depression is equally common in men and women and it shows great strength if you have managed to disclose this to someone or have begun to find ways of seeking help as this brings you one step closer to overcoming the problem.
