Critical incident debriefing
Sometimes events can happen in the workplace or elsewhere that can generate a significant degree of upset or emotional trauma. Examples of such events include accidents, death of a colleague, events with excessive media interest, events with a familiar victim, etc.
In such instances, it is common to undertake a critical incident debriefing in which the event, and those party to it, are provided with a structured process:
- to help understand and normalise reactions with guidelines for support
- debriefing what happened to share views/feelings and discuss coping mechanisms and
- to check in a few days to ensure ongoing management.
A critical incident debriefing process has been shown by research to minimise the disturbance arising from a difficult event, and reduce the likelihood of adverse reactions such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
We are able to offer psychology-led critical incident debriefing services, including trauma support, usually at short notice. Please contact us on corporate@glasgowpsychology.co.uk or call us on 0141-404-5411 for further information.
