Assertiveness - becoming an assertive communicator
Assertiveness is about learning how to communicate assertively with others - it does not involve aggressive or bullying behaviour.
Assertive communicators acknowledge the right of everyone to express their feelings and thoughts openly. They do not allow themselves to be manipulated or intimidated by others and they are able to ask for what they need and want without being aggressive or hostile.
Lack of assertiveness can lead to many problems including: saying 'yes' when you should be saying 'no', anxiety about previous actions, social isolation due to anxiety about interactions or over hostile behaviour, low self-esteem and depression, but there are things that you can do to improve assertiveness skills.
