Anger and aggression - an introduction

Anger is considered by psychologists to be one of the five primary emotions. These are the emotions which you feel as an immediate response to a situation and also include happiness, sadness, fear and disgust.

Situations which cause people to feel angry are usually those in which you feel threatened or as though you have been mistreated, feelings of jealousy, guilt and embarrassment can also be behind anger. Threats are not necessarily physical such as being shoved by someone, for example job loss often triggers anager as this can signal a threat to your financial security.

Everyone experiences anger as a natural response to certain situations but it is when this anger results in aggression that it becomes a problem. Anger may be released by shouting at a loved one or through physical violence which can cause huge problems in family, work and other social relations. It is men who most often develop anger problems by expressing their anger through aggressive behaviour, but it is not uncommon for women to have anger problems too.
